 About Us

Dr Leonard Lee gained his medical degree from Sydney University in 1980. He completed senior resident training at St Vincent's Hospital before training in psychiatry at the University of Newcastle and the University of New South Wales. He attained Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists in 1988, membership of the faculty of child psychiatry in 1991,membership of the Australian College of Legal Medicine in 1997 and the certificate in forensic psychiatry of the NSW Institute of Psychiatry in 1998. He has completed training in assessment of permanent impairment for the workers compensation and motor accident jurisdictions.

He was a medical and surgical resident at St Vincent's Hospital Sydney from 1980 till 1982 gaining experience in accident and emergency, general and plastic surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, cardiology, respiratory medicine, neurology, orthopaedics, renal medicine, and other fields. He was seconded to Liverpool, Fairfield, Griffith and Wagga Wagga Hospitals as part of the hospital's rotation scheme.

He trained in psychiatry under the auspices of the University of Newcastle Postgraduate Psychiatry scheme from 1983 until 1986. This was an innovative, eclectic, self-directed and progressive scheme instituted by the late Professor David Madison, which was subsequently under the directorship of Professor Beverley Raphael, a noted world authority in the field of disaster and grief. Dr Lee gained a broad and critical appraisal of psychiatric perspectives with experience in the strengths and limitations of psychiatric perspectives. He worked at The Royal Newcastle Hospital as a liaison psychiatry registrar as well as with the Shortland Clinic, which specialised in therapeutic community approaches to psychological disturbance gaining experience in personality disorder, mood disorder and illness behaviour. He gained experience in the large schedule five hospitals: Morisset and Newcastle Psychiatric Centre (later James Fletcher Hospital) where he managed chronic illnesses such as schizophrenia, manic depression, alcohol and drug abuse, anxiety and forensic high security patients. He completed registrar training at Sutherland and Prince of Wales Hospitals and child psychiatry training at The Children's Hospital and Rivendell Adolescent Unit, Concord

He has held a staff specialist position at the Prince of Wales Hospital in child psychiatry attached to the Eastern Suburbs developmental disability services.

He has also held positions as a Visiting Medical Officer at Griffith and Deniliquin, which are part of the Greater Murray Area Health Service (1988 until 1997) and with the Sydney Private Clinic, while also maintaining a private practise in general psychiatry and psychotherapy.

He is a member of the Australian College of Legal Medicine.

He continues to maintain a busy private practice and pursues continuing professional development.

He has had extensive experience in work stress, personal injury, compulsory third party victims' compensation matters and 30A Expert Witness Reports for the Family Court. He has provided comprehensive assessments for numerous insurance companies, statutory organisations and public service departments, as well as for plaintiff solicitors.

His particular areas of interest are the assessment of personality, and the elucidation of predisposing, precipitating and perpetuating factors for psychiatric disorder as well as abnormal illness behaviour and interpersonal difficulty.
